In condensing the gases with water is there direct water contact with the gas vapors?

In condensing the gases with water is there direct water contact with the gas vapors? Is the water cooling system closed loop?
No, in condensing the gases with water is not there direct water contact with the gas vapors, for our pyrolysis plant condensing system uses the water cooling system with spray, so the water is outside the gas pipe, while the gas is inside. What's more, the water cooling system is closed loop, and the water can be recycled in the whole unit.
